The passion for art has always been present in my life since I was a child. I used to draw and create small sculptures with any wooden object. As I grew up, my search for information and perfection in the craft also grew. In the courses I took, I always felt that there was information missing that I had to look for on my own.
In this article, I share with you a way to organize your knowledge about the study of sculpture. So that at the end of the road, you will be a prestigious sculptor with a broad mastery of form and feel confident to face each new creation or any challenge.
As a sculptor, you must have certain skills that I will reveal to you shortly….
In school, they will surely teach you what a sculpture is: it is a three-dimensional object that occupies a place in space by its volume and conceptually must deliver a message. You will study the history of sculpture and the different artistic movements. You should NEVER forget the classics.
Now, as a sculptor, you must study design with some concepts that will form your aesthetic sense, such as: anatomy, proportions, rhythm, movement, and balance.
Then, you must enter the world of modeling with its different techniques, which will enrich your mastery of form.
Later, immerse yourself in the world of sculpture in its various manifestations. At this point, you will be able to create your sketches and models of any dream you have idealized.
Next, you can enter the world of textures. Texture in sculpture is like color in painting. There is a universe of textures depending on the tools you use, and at this stage, you will take advantage of this to master them.
And finally comes the world of mounting. In other words, mastering what type of base suits your sculpture and what proportions should exist between your sculpture and its base.
Each of these elements is a world in itself, but if you have an organized process, you will achieve your goals step by step.
To summarize:
To be a good sculptor, you must master certain elements, in addition to what you are taught in school. For this, you need to know:
– How to design and learn certain concepts that will form your aesthetic sense.
– How to master modeling with its different techniques, which will enrich your mastery of form.
– How to study sculpture in its various manifestations, enriching it with the mastery of texture and mounting.
Here you have a methodology that I have followed in my years as a self-taught sculptor, and I have achieved magnificent results. Try it and let me know what you think.
